Postdoctoral Researcher, Knowledge Discovery from Moving Objects

The GIScience Center at the Department of Geography, University of Zurich invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow position within the framework of the European COST Action IC0903 «Knowledge Discovery from Moving Objects (MOVE)». The position will start on 1st March 2012, or as soon as possible thereafter. It is initially limited to one year, with an option for extension to a maximum of 2.5 years. Salary is competitive and commensurate with the pay scale of the University of Zurich. The successful applicant will be based in Zurich and will be working in the group of Prof. Robert Weibel, who is serving as Chair of COST Action IC0903 MOVE.

Duties of the position include coordination work as Scientific Secretary of COST Action IC0903 MOVE (http://www.move-cost.info), in the order of 20 %. The remaining time can be used for independent research, as well as joint work with other group members. In order to maximize synergies between the coordination duties and the own research, you should have a research focus that falls within the scope of MOVE. Three main themes are addressed by MOVE: 1) modeling and representation of movement in databases; 2) analysis of movement through spatio-temporal data mining; and 3) visual analytics of movement and cognitive issues. MOVE offers a unique and successful, large European network that unites researchers from various strands of computer science and geographic information science, who are joined by domain specialists from a broad range of relevant application domains, such as animal ecology, transportation, urban planning, tourism, and many more. As Scientific Secretary of this network, you will be in an excellent position to liaise and collaborate directly with key scholars in the research area covered by MOVE, and you will have access to unique research opportunities.

The GIScience Center hosts several research groups working on diverse topics including digital terrain modeling, uncertainty handling, geographic data mining and information retrieval, movement analysis, digital cartography and mobile systems, geovisual analytics, and spatial cognition research. Applicants are required to hold a PhD degree in a relevant discipline and should have a strong research and publication record in the area covered by MOVE, commensurate with their career stage. You will also have a very good standard of written and spoken English. Experience in project coordination will be considered a strong asset.
