Pedestrian monitoring system data visualisation

Melbourne City Council have implemented a 24-hour pedestrian monitoring system (24PM)  which measures pedestrian activity in the central city and Docklands precincts each day.  The system, comprises 18 sensors and counts pedestrian movements to give the City of Melbourne a better understanding of how people use these precincts to support place based management and  the  plan for future needs. The online visualisation tool (http://www.pedestrian.melbourne.vic.gov.au/) created by OOM Creative, is an interactive map of these sensor locations, which enables users to see pedestrian counts on particular dates and times and compare data both spatially and temporally. This is an interesting application of visualisation for enabling decision-makers to explore urban space and place and has a number of possible application including, streetscape design and planning, traffic management, major event management etc…

Visualisation and the Future of Integrated Modeling Science and Technology

The International Journal on Environmental Modelling and Software has recently published a Thematic Issue on the Future of Integrated Modelling Science and Technology. In this issue there are a couple of papers from members of our ISPRS working group. Specifically, Gustavo Arcinegas et al.  has published his results on the effectiveness of collaborative map-based decision support tools where an interactive mapping device is used as the interface between spatial information and participants. Marcos Nino-Ruiz et al. introduces a spatial model steering approach for raising the awareness of uncertainty inherent in the land use allocation process where visualisation is used for enabling end users exploring a range of “what if”  futre land use scenarios. It is good to see visualisation influencing the future of integrated modelling science and technology.
