A paper published in Nature this month titled “Holographic three-dimensional telepresence using large-area photorefractive polymer” discusses significant advances in holographic technology similar to that used in Star Wars for projecting  images of Princess Leia.  As stated in the paper further improvements could bring applications in updatable 3D mapping, which would be pretty exciting.
